These three-day silent retreats emerge from a simple but profound invitation: to spend several days doing nothing other than remaining with what is actually happening within oneself — not analyzing it, not improving it, not resolving it, but allowing the content of consciousness to slow down and reveal itself.
Krishnamurti spoke often about the importance of silence — not as a technique or a discipline imposed from outside, but as a natural movement of attention when the usual busyness of thought is not being fed. This retreat takes that seriously. Participants are asked to refrain from phone use, reading, writing, listening to audio, and watching video throughout the retreat.
This program is intended for you to be with yourself—however that looks and feels. We will meet at regular times as a group to share and respect this intention of holding space for silence in ourselves and one another. The schedule is made specifically so that we can do away with our need to communicate about our daily engagements while having the opportunity to meet throughout the day and spend time together in silence. The orientation, which happens on Friday afternoon is essential, as that is the only time we will communicate verbally and important practical and philosophical considerations need to be established as a group, so please refrain from being late.
This is not a practice in self-discipline or self-improvement, nor is anything required of participants beyond a genuine willingness to try. At the close of the retreat, participants are warmly invited — but never pressured — to share anything they might wish about their experience.
Mary Kelley considers herself a student of the Teachings of Krishnamurti and thereby a life-long learner. She feels blessed to be Director of the High School at the Oak Grove School, a Krishnamurti school in Ojai, where she daily feels the invitation to inquire into fundamental questions, observe “what is” and deeply reflect in relationship with her fellow learners. She has also spent time teaching and learning at K Centers and Gatherings in India, England and Switzerland. She has facilitated this Silent Retreat several times and feels it is a unique opportunity to allow the mind to slow down, empty itself and discover something new and essential.
